In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
