A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's major government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an urgent suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national undertakings.
